Breathe Into Function
What is Myofunctional Therapy?
Oral myofunctional therapy (OMT), also known as "myo", is a type of therapy that trains the muscles of the mouth, tongue, and face to function properly. It focuses on exercises to correct muscle imbalances and promote healthy habits.
Snoring and mouth breathing are common sounds at night, but not normal at any age. When the facial muscles and tongue are weak or underdeveloped these tissues can fall back on the airway reducing oxygen during sleep. Individuals suffering from Sleep Apnea (OSA), snoring, and mouth breathing can strengthen these muscles to improve tone and posture to improve sleep.
Correcting dysfunctional muscle use can help relieve tension and pain in the TMJ, jaw, head and neck. Reduce clenching and grinding by restoring function, eliminating compensations, and improve oral health. Wearing a night guard will help protect your teeth from damage at night, but does not address the behavior.
Tension that restricts the tongues functional movement is more common than you think. Many individuals are unaware that they have these tethered oral tissues (TOTs) leading to OMDs, affect facial development, poor sleep, and disordered breathing. Preparing for a tongue tie release with pre and post-op orofacial myofunctional therapy to optimize your results.
